How to help students reflect and build background knowledge

Preparing students for academic study in English presents several challenges: Academic topics seeming dry and inaccessible; texts having a distinct vocabulary; and students’ lack of familiarity with core disciplines like listening to lectures and essay writing. But there’s another challenge which is often overlooked and that is students, especially very low-level students, being asked to discuss and think critically about things they have little experience of.
