How do your students deal with awkward gaps and sudden silences during English conversations? Do they avoid the conversations all together? As teachers, we can help learners develop an awareness of how miscommunication may occur and build lifelong skills so they can (more) actively participate in conversations. In this interactive webinar, I will briefly introduce some research into students’ perspectives about awkward breaks in conversations before looking at how we can incorporate activities into the classroom to empower our students, thereby decreasing the chance of miscommunication, particularly in an English as a lingua franca situation.
